The Divine Nebula of Sinsemilla, 2021
March 2021
“We are made of star stuff.”
The name of Carl Sagan is not unfamiliar to any seasoned stoner, as he reminded us science and spirituality can co-exist. Looking up into the endless night sky is one of the easiest ways to recognize how insignificant we are in that our choices are meaningless on a cosmic scale, and yet simultaneously how every day we have matters when we’re only afforded a small conscious blip in time. Our matter is never destroyed, only reborn, as our individual consciousnesses dance through the cosmos over an unfathomable amount of time. Just as above, so below- like the stars within galaxies, from the microscopic atoms come seeds and their roots. Cannabis is a gift on this rock we happen to be lucky enough to occupy that provides insight and encourages us to love. I chose to echo the breath of life being exhaled within nebulas using a portrait of a modern woman embodying the divine feminine I’ve called Sinsemilla. After all, it only makes sense a plant of light and healing came from our collective mother we all share- Earth.
This piece had several incarnations before arriving where it is. The first drawing came in 2016 while I was in college, and then in January 2018 came the first colored iteration, and then in January 2021 I decided to paint her. I knew she wasn’t at her final form yet, which is why you see the fourth incarnation two months later.
