I first made a zine about “witch sticks”, legal smokeable herbs and flowers, in a printmaking course in 2016. I had done some researching into plants for the sheer joy of inhaling combusted material in a convenient “stick” format, and began sharing them with friends, which became me making and selling packs of them to others. It was a fair bit of work, and I opted to create a tutorial to share how they’re made and how inexpensive it can be.

This was a cornerstone of me creating Rosetta Stoned- I knew I could improve upon what I had already done. Here are the remade pages, with their 2016 predecessor beneath that. Check the tutorials section for ideas of what to do with these plants!

Witch Sticks

The original Witch Stick zine was made to be printed only in black and white, as zines traditionally were. They were meant to be printed at home, or in masse with a xerox machine. I drew the plants on watercolor paper and hand-ground sumi ink from a block to paint with, and then scanned those to digitally arrange it all and add text. I’ve given out countless copies of this little humble zine over the years- it’s been so helpful for every time someone asks me how I roll joints or what I mix in with cannabis.
