For veterans day, I opted to recreate old sailor tattoos that navymen would get. They all have specific meanings regarding where you’ve been and what you’ve done in the world, and are obtained as a rite of passage. The pig and rooster were commonly gotten to make sure you always made it back to land, because in shipwrecks the pigs and chickens kept in wooden crates would usually float to shore.
